Joe Bousquet has just won his second U.S. Modern Moth national Championship! Proving that "time-in-the-boat" is really the key to winning, Bousquet drove his Mistral design "(turbo) Try-Umph" to victory. Winds of 10 to 16 knots and flat water allowed Rod Mincher to power up his Aussie scow up on the reaches, however Bousquet was simply too fast upwind. With Mincher in second, another proven hull owned and driven by Chris Hart took third.

Per Sandell won the junior title, in what was largely a match racing contest with Ben Miller. Both Sandell and Miller sailed Mistrals they built themselves.

Sixteen Moths raced at Brigantine in an excellent event, hosted by George Albaugh and the Brigantine Yacht Club. If you didn't show up you missed a fabulous party at Joe and Judy Courter's house Friday evening (which included a spectacular laser light show, simulating an orange full moon rising out of the sea. It was just like a George Inness painting!). On Saturday new class member Bill Miller proved himself a true Mothist by using a chain saw to fine tune his son's hull on the club's front porch. "I was really surprised nobody flinched when the chips started to fly" said Miller (Walt Collins was later seen measuring the radius of Miller's hull sections with a Makita catalog in his back pocket!). The event also featured the worldwide premier of Bill Beaver's performance art piece "I'd walk a mile with a Skippy" , and he did, with the boat on his head. George Albaugh later apologized for lack of close parking, but by then Beaver had been booked at the Knitting Factory in lower Manhattan for next Tuesday night (sixteen bucks, call for tickets). Giving the regatta an international flavor was Aussie Matt Bidwell, who, with his Axeman, was flown in by the class at great expense (hey, well worth it!). Bidwell will be entering twice a day sessions with his therapist after racing with the U.S. fleet.
