To improve your starts:

Set up a 10 foot wide "gate" and use a digital watch with alarm set for five minutes. Sail
around for the five minute interval, but try to go through the gate at full speed just after the
alarm sounds. Do this in many different sailing conditions until you automatically adjust your
approach based on wind speed. Once you have this skill mastered, you can try to duplicate it in
starting traffic.
